BLACK
FARMERS

BLACK FARMERS:

A farmer is a person who is engaged in
agrarian business by using land. This
is a lifeway that was the dominant
occupation of the majority of human
beings well into the 20th century.

The term farmer usually applies to
a person who grows field crops, or
has orchards, vineyards or market
gardens with a view to selling to
others as food.

They may, however, provide raw
materials for industrial purposes,
such as the cereals for alcoholic
beverages, fruit for juices, hides
for leather, and wool or flax for
yarns and cloth-making.

Farmers may also be involved in
rearing cattle for meat or milk.
Often, a narrow range of crops
or produce is sold for money with
which the farmer buys everything
else in a market.

SECTION 2

Agriculture

Agriculture:
a term which encompasses farming,
is the art, science or practice
of producing food, feed, fiber
and many other desired goods by
the systematic raising of plants
and animals.

Agri is from Latin ager ("a field"),
and culture is from Latin cultura,
meaning "cultivation" in the strict
sense of tillage of the soil.
Thus a literal reading of the English
word yields tillage of the soil of a
field. In actual usage, Agriculture
denotes a broad array of activities
essential to the food and the material
production, including all techniques
for raising and processing livestock
(Animal husbandry) no less than those
essential to crop planting and their
harvesting.

Agriculture is also short for the study of
the practice of agriculture—more formally
known as agricultural science.

Increasingly, in addition to food for
humans and animal feeds, agriculture
produces goods such as cut flowers,
ornamental and nursery plants, timber
or lumber, fertilizers, animal hides,
leather, industrial chemicals (starch,
sugar, ethanol, alcohols and plastics),
fibers (cotton, wool, hemp, and flax),
fuels (methane from biomass, biodiesel)
and both legal and illegal drugs.
Genetically engineered plants and animals
produce specialty drugs.

SUBSISTENCE
AGRICULTURE

SUBSISTENCE
AGRICULTURE:

Farming sometimes refers to subsistence
agriculture, the production of enough
food to meet just the needs of the
farmer/agriculturalist and his/her
family.
It may also refer to that of industrial
agriculture, often referred to as factory
farming) long prevalent in developed nations
and increasingly so elsewhere, which consists
of obtaining financial income from the
cultivation of land to yield produce, the
commercial raising of animals (animal
husbandry), or both.

SECTION 4

ANIMAL
HUSBANDRY

ANIMAL HUSBANDRY:
Animal husbandry is the agricultural
practice of breeding and raising
livestock. As such, it is a vital
skill for farmers and, in some
countries in many ways, as much art
as it is science.

SECTION 5

BLACKBELT

BLACKBELT:
The south's Black Belt is a region
of that, part of the larger south-
east Region of the Southern United
States, which stretches from Texas
to Virginia.
This region includes some of the
poorest counties in the United States.
The name referred originally to the
thin layer of exceptionally fertile
black soil which encouraged cotton
farming in the pioneer period of the
south's history.
It may just as well now refer to the
exceptionally high proportion of the
African American residents in these
counties.

Major characteristics of
Black Belt counties include:

Rich, dark loamy soil underlain by a
soft limestone known as Selma chalk.

Primary industry remains agriculture
with little industrial or commercial
development.

Proportionally large African American
population.

High unemployment rate.

Low rates of educational attainment.

Isolated from major transportation
infrastructure.

Limited access to health care.

Substandard housing stock.
