SHAPES
Female body shape or figure is the cumulative product of a woman's
skeletal structure (her build) and the quantity and distribution of
muscle and fat on the body. There are, and have been, wide differences
on what should be considered an ideal or preferred body shape, both
for attractiveness and for health reasons. These have varied among
cultures simultaneously. As with most physical traits, there is a wide
range of normality of female body shapes.
Human beings and their cultures have perennially focused attention on
the female body as a source of aesthetic pleasure, sexual attraction,
fertility, and reproduction.
The female body occurs in a range of shapes. The female figure is typically
narrower at the waist than at the bust and hips, and usually has one of four
basic shapes: banana, pear, apple, or hourglass. The bust, waist, and hips
are called inflection points, and the ratios of their circumferences define
these basic shapes. Usually, the bust area will depend on the person's weight
and height.

A woman's bust, waist, and hips are her physical inflection points,
and the ratios of their circumferences, are used to define her basic
shape. These are sometimes described as banana, pear, apple, or
hourglass shapes, though other shortcut terms are also used.
The bust is measured across the fullest part of a woman's breasts,
generally across the crest of the breast while wearing a properly-
fitting brassiere; the waist is measured at the smallest circumference
of the abdomen; and the hips are measured at the largest circumference
of the hips and buttocks.
It is said that the female body usually inflects inward towards the waist
around the middle of the abdomen between the costal margins and the pelvic
crests. The waist is typically smaller than the bust and hips, unless there is
high proportion of body fat distributed around it. How much the bust or hips
inflect inward, towards the waist, determines a woman's structural shape. The
hourglass shape is considered by many cultures to be the ideal or usual female
shape, though only about 8% of women have this shape.

SHAPES
Independent of fat percentage, weight or width, female body shapes
are categorised into one of four elementary geometric shapes,
though there are very wide ranges of actual sizes within each shape:
Apple
(triangle downward)
Apple shaped women have broad(er) shoulders compared to their (narrower)
hips. Apple shaped women tend to have slim legs/thighs, while the abdomen
and chest look out of proportion compared to the rest of the body. Fat is
mainly distributed in the abdomen, chest, and face.
Banana or straight
(rectangular)
The waist measurement is less than 9 inches smaller than the hips or bust
measurement. Body fat is distributed predominantly in the abdomen, buttocks,
chest, and face. This overall fat distribution creates the typical ruler
(straight) shape.
Pear or spoon or bell
(triangle upward)
The hip measurement is greater than the bust measurement. The distribution
of fat varies, with fat tending to deposit first in the buttocks, hips, and
thighs. As body fat percentage increases, an increasing proportion of body
fat is distributed around the waist and upper abdomen. The women of this
body type tend to have a (relatively) larger rear, robust thighs, and a
small(er) bosom.
Hourglass shape.

The hip and bust are almost of equal size with a narrow waist. Body fat
distribution tends to be around both the upper body and lower body. This
body type enlarges the arms, chest, hips, and rear before other parts,
such as the waist and upper abdomen.

AND TERMINOLOGIES
Classifications of female body sizes are mainly based on the circumference
of the bust-waist-hip (BWH), as in 34-24-36 (inches) respectively. In this
case, the waist-hip ratio is 24/36 = 0.67. Many terms or classifications
are used to describe body shape types:
V shape:
Males tend to have proportionally smaller buttocks, bigger chests and
wider shoulders, which makes for a V-shape of the torso. V-shaped males
are considered attractive.
Hourglass shape:
The female body is significantly narrower in the waist both in front
view and profile view. The waist is narrower than the chest region due
to the breasts, and narrower than the hip region due to the width of
the buttocks, which results in an hourglass shape.
Apple:
The stomach region is wider than the hip section, mainly in males.
Pear or spoon or bell:
The hip section is wider than the upper body, mainly in females.
Rectangle or straight or banana:
The hip, waist, and shoulder sections are relatively similar.

The notion of all women being an apple or a pear shape is a bit outdated,
don't you think? So how many body type are there? 12 according to Brit
style experts Trinny and Susannah, there are 12 body types:
Apple:
Round all over
Hourglass:
Round on top and bottom, with a tiny waist
Skittle
(American translation: Bowling pin):
Small on torso, big in the thighs
Vase:
Like an hourglass but stretched out
Cornet:
Top-heavy, but bottom-thin
Lollipop:
Big bosom, long legs.
Column:
Tall and thin
Bell:
Small on top but quite large on the bottom
Goblet:
Heavy and square in the torso, with long, thin legs.
Cello:
Big shoulders and bosom, with even an even larger bottom

Before undertaking the process of weight loss it is important to learn
about your body type (also known as somatotype). There are three basic
body types, each reacting to weight gain and loss in a different way.
Nutritionists, fitness instructors, doctors and other health professionals
use body type to aid them in designing individual, effective and efficient
weight loss and fitness programs. Knowing your body type will help you to
understand your body, so that you can work with it rather than against it.
All body types can gain or lose weight but the degree and rate at which
they do varies. This will enable you to achieve your goals, make it easier
to plan a fitness routine and diet suited to you that will provide you with
maximum results.

HOW TO KNOW
YOUR BODY SHAPE?
Best means to identify the body shape is to stand in front of the
mirror and look at the figure and try to think which shape it
resembles: pear, spoon, hour glass, apple, ruler or cone shaped.
How to measure your body?
Measuring the size of the body parts such chest, waist and hips would
help to ascertain the body shape better. For men the middle of the
chest should be measured and for women the breasts. Before measuring,
it necessary to exhale to get accurate measurements.
The waist measurements should be taken 1 inch above the belly button
and hips should be measured across the widest section. It’s always
better to have some help in measuring to get the exact numbers.
Different types of female body shapes
Hourglass Shape:
This is considered as one of the best female body shapes. Where the bust
and hips measurements would be almost the same circumference, though the
bust can be ‘one inch’ larger than the hips. The waist would be much
smaller. A perfect hourglass shape is where the difference between the
‘waist and the bust’ and ‘waist and hips’ is at least ‘nine inches’.
Pear or Spoon Shape:
If there is a wide difference in measurements between the hips and bust
and hardly any between the chest and waist. Hips are ‘two inches’ or more
larger than the bust and waist is less than 9.25? smaller than the bust.
Ruler(Rectangle) Shape:
If there is hardly any difference in the measurements of waist, bust and
hips. The waist is less than ‘nine inches’ smaller than the bust.
Conical(Triangle) Shape:
Normally where the bust and waist are same but the hips are ‘at least nine
inches smaller’ than the chest. The standard measurement is, bust 3.6? or
larger than the hips and the waist less than 9? smaller than the bust.
Apple Shape:
If the waist measures larger compared to the hip and chest.
