A term coined by
William McDonaugh
and Michael Braungart.


The process of converting an industrial
nutrient (material) into something of
similar or greater value, in its second
life.

Aluminum and glass, for example, can usually
be upcycled into the same quality of aluminum
and glass as the original products.

UPCYCLING




Upcycling is the use of waste materials to
provide useful products. Ideally, it is a
reinvestment in the environment and embodiment
of the notion that while using resources one
is also contributing to them and their value.

This is antithesis of the consume and waste
concept in society.

"Upcycling is the practice of taking something
that is disposable and transforming it into
something of greater use and value.

The term upcycling was coined by William McDonough
and Michael Braungart, authors of Cradle to Cradle:
Remaking the Way We Make Things.

recycled industrial nutrients
(materials) lose viability or value
in the process of recycling.

This means they can only be used in a
degraded form for components other than
their original use.

White writing paper, for example, is
downcycled into materials such as cardboard
and cannot be used to create more premium
writing paper.

'Cradle to Cradle:
Remaking the Way We Make Things'

A 2002 book by:
German chemist Michael ,
architect William McDonough.


It is a manifesto calling for the
transformation of human industry
through ecologically intelligent
design.

Through historical sketches on the
roots of the industrial revolution;
commentary on science, nature and
society; descriptions of key design
principles; and compelling examples
of innovative products and business
strategies already reshaping the
marketplace, McDonough and Braungart
make the case that an industrial
system that "takes, makes and wastes"
can become a creator of goods and
services that generate ecological,
social and economic value.

This is based on a system of "lifecycle
development" initiated by Braungart and
colleagues at the Environmental Protection
Encouragement Agency (EPEA) in the 1990s,
which has been cited by the Society for
Toxicology and Chemistry in its early
1990s publication A Technical Framework
for Life-Cycle Assessment.
