RELIGIOUS
NGOs

Religious NGOs play an important role as social service providers,
and through their faith-based approach they have the ability to
develop deeper relationships with communities in developing countries.

Yes, religion has in some cases led to extremism, but it also has
spearheaded social change.

Religious NGOs continue to have this ability to fight for the
marginalised and combat extremism through representing different
faiths under the golden rule of all religions: “Do unto others as
you would have them to do unto you.” Religious NGOs need to
continually reflect this and, if done faithfully, their ability to
connect with communities and promote a positive message for the
religious may be the best way in which to combat extremism and
advocate for positive social change.

SECTION 2

FAITH-BASED
ORGANIZATIOS

Faith-based organizations are engaged in activities such as community
and economic development, human service provision, anti-violence
efforts, and community organizing. They also build social capital and
provide a valuable source of volunteers. In addition, their locations
within neighborhoods provide valuable community space where neighbors
meet to discuss issues. In other countries, such as Rwanda, NGOs
provide vital social services, counseling, and economic opportunities
for genocide survivors.

SECTION 3

FAITH-BASED
NGOs
AND
INTERNATIONAL
PEACEBUILDING

•Faith-based non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are increasingly
active and increasingly effective in international peacebuilding.

•Faith-based organizations have a special role to play in zones of
religious conflict, but their peacebuilding programs do not need to
be confined to addressing religious conflict.

•Although in some cases peacebuilding projects of faith-based
organizations resemble very closely peacebuilding by secular NGOs,
in most instances the various religious orientations of these
faith-based organizations shape the peacebuilding they undertake.

•The peacebuilding agendas of these organizations are
diverse and range from high-level mediation to training
and peacebuilding-through-development at grassroots levels.

•Very often peace can be promoted most efficiently by introducing
peacebuilding components into more traditional relief and
development activities.

WHAT ARE
THE DIFFERENT
TYPES
OF
CHRISTIAN
NGOs

The different types of Christian non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
that exist throughout the world parallel the work of many non-Christian
NGOs in certain key areas. These areas are focused on reducing poverty
in developing nations, which includes sub-categories that contribute to
poverty such as recognizing and supporting the key roles that women play
in society, facilitating improvements in health and education, and making
an effort to improve international finance towards poor nations such as
by encouraging debt forgiveness.

Other key arenas that Christian NGOs operate in that reflect the principles
of secular civil society organizations include environmental protection and
efforts to curtail excessive military spending in poor nations.

The role that any particular non-governmental organization can play often
revolves around one of about 25 different social advancement topics. These
can be broadly categorized into three overarching areas, however, in which
Christian NGOs are actively involved, with one of these being that of
promoting peace and security through conflict resolution, disarmament, and
respect for human rights. Of equal importance to Christian NGOs is the
promotion of respect for the family through care for children, honoring the
status of women in society, and resolving issues involving refugees, health,
and nutrition needs.

GRANTS FOR
FAITH-BASED
ORGANIZATIONS

Religion continues to play a major role in the public and private lives
of Americans, and many charitable and philanthropic organizations exist
to support religious groups and projects.

A number of these provide grants and funding for groups motivated by their
faith--whether Christianity or another world religion--to help others in
spiritual and practical ways.

Government Funding

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, part of the federal
government, gives grants to faith-based organizations for specific
purposes. Causes it supports include organizations working for the
prevention and treatment of substance abuse, homeless charities, child
care services and youth abstinence programs. The Center for Faith-Based
and Neighborhood Partnerships looks after this aspect of the department's
work.

Local Organizations

Several organizations provide funding for religious projects and ministries
in a particular area or state. AMERC, for example, gives grants to Christian
students and ministers in the Appalachian region. The Grace and Franklin
Bernsen Foundation supports religious groups in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Pew
Charitable Trust funds churches in and around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Fundsnet provides details about their websites, along with information for
similar organizations.

Templeton Foundation

Named in honor of the philanthropist Sir John Templeton, this foundation
gives grants specifically to individuals and groups who aim to bring
together religion and science. It supports projects that advance human
intellectual knowledge and encourage dialogue between philosophers,
theologians and scientists. The foundation has the motto "How little we
know, how eager to learn."

First Fruit, Inc.

First Fruit gives grants specifically to Christian ministries in
the developing world, which includes continents such as India and
Africa. According to FirstFruit.org, recent successful projects
include missionary outreaches in Kenya, Ethiopia and Vietnam. As
well as supporting evangelism and preaching of the gospel, First
Fruits supports "holistic ministry," which includes feeding the
poor and economic development, for example.

Lilly Endowment

The Lilly Endowment provides grants to churches, leaders and
religious institutions. Its aim is to strengthen American
churches of every denomination by training leaders, encouraging
religious reflection and supporting Christian organizations that
work for the benefit of all of society. Areas covered by funding
include clergy renewal, theological education and youth programs.
