Your perineum is the thin layer of skin between your genitals
(vaginal opening or scrotum) and anus. Inside your body, your
perineum consists of tissue that makes up the bottom of your
pelvic cavity. It’s a common site for tears during childbirth.
Minor tears may heal on their own, while major ones may require
stitches.

MASSAGE
Perineal massage helps prepare the pelvic floor muscles (in the area between
your vagina and anus) to stretch during a vaginal delivery. Regular perineal
massage may reduce the risk of tearing and stitches, scarring, episiotomy,
postpartum urinary or fecal incontinence, and postpartum perineum pain.
Perineal massage is easy to learn, and takes less than 10 minutes once or
twice a week in the last month of pregnancy.

REGION
The pelvic cavity, like most spaces in the body, has an inlet and an
outlet. For the most part, the pelvic outlet is closed off by the
muscles of the pelvic floor (levator ani & coccygeus muscles). The
region of the body superficial (caudal in a standing individual) to
these muscles and medial to the thighs is known as the perineal
region.

perineal massage. This technique helps to relax and soften the perineum,
the area between the vagina and the rectum. Perineal massage is often
done late in pregnancy to help prevent tearing of the perineum during
childbirth. It might feel awkward at first, but it can have a lot of
