Gathering Supplies
There are some fundamental supplies that should be put in preschool art
activity kits. If you are making this kit for a child to keep at home,
you may want to put all the art supplies in it, but if you are making
this kit for the child to take to school or for use in your own daycare,
you might want to keep things that may become messy in a separate place.
Gather together the materials listed below to begin the process of
learning how to make your own preschool art activity kits.
Fiskar scissors
Glue stick
Crayons
Markers
Watercolor paints and paint brushes
Shoe Box
Construction paper
Composition notebook (unlined)
Stickers
Designing
Check with the preschool if your child is going to be attending one to be
sure that you have the right type of box. For an at home preschool art
activity kit, a shoe box works well because it is large enough to hold all
the items and very easy to personalize. Follow the steps below to help
children make personalized art kits.
1.Help the child to cut the construction paper so that it fits around each
side of the shoe box, with the exception of the bottom.
2.Ask the child to decorate each piece of paper that is cut out for the shoe
box. Children can use glue, crayons, markers and stickers to personalize
their box.
3.Help the child to glue the appropriate pieces of paper to the shoe box.
4.If the child is going to be using this art activity box in a preschool,
you may want to label the items with the child's initials to prevent any
confusion in the future.
5.Allow the box to dry.
6.Put all art materials in the art activity box.
7.Pick an appropriate place to store the box so that the child can learn
about putting things where they belong.
As you learn how to make your own preschool art activity kits, children
are also learning about the different uses for items such as shoe boxes.
They may also feel a sense of excitement as they use the items in the box.
This can be especially important if your child is preparing to go to
daycare or preschool for the first time. If you are starting your own
daycare, this is a great activity to get the year started and to get the

You will need a few basic supplies to put together each activity kit:
A zip-up 3 ring binder or “trapper keeper” (additional pockets in the
front and back)
A zip-up pencil bag that snaps into a 3 ring binder
Crayon, colored pencils, or colored pens
A folder with 3-hole punch
Some notebook paper with 3-hole punch
Now that you have the basic supplies, it’s time to decide what else you
want to include in your activity kits. You can tailor each binder to fit
the educational level of the child.
