HISTORY
OF
TECHNOLOGY

The history of technology is the history
of the invention of tools and techniques
for doing practical things.

Modern history is intimately related
with the history of science, as the
discovery of new background knowledge
has enabled us to create new things,
and conversely, many scientific
endeavors have become possible through
technologies which assist humans to
travel to places we could not otherwise
go, and probe the nature of the universe
in more detail than our natural senses
allow.

INVENTIONS

An invention is an object, process, or
technique which displays an element
of novelty.

An invention may sometimes be based on
earlier developments, collaborations or
ideas, and the process of invention
requires at least the awareness that an
existing concept or method can then be
modified or transformed into an invention.

However, some inventions also represent a
radical breakthrough in science or some
technology which extends the boundaries of
human knowledge.

Legal protection can sometimes be granted
to an invention by way of a patent.

TOOLS
DEVICES

A tool or device is a piece of equipment
which typically provides a mechanical
advantage in accomplishing a physical
task.

The most basic tools are simple machines.
For example, a crowbar simply functions
as a lever.
The further out from the pivot point,
the more force is transmitted along
the lever.

When particularly intended for domestic
use, a tool is often called a utensil.

Tools can also be largely cognitive,
such as written language.

Non-physical entities such as:
process;
(improvement or reengineering),
information architecture,
creativity,
and learning itself are all invaluable
tools used by humans for individual
and collective benefit.

FUNCTIONS
OF
TOOLS

Many tools or groups of tools serve
to perform one or more of a set of
basic operations, such as:

Cutting:
knife, scythe, sickle, etc...

Concentrating force:
hammer, maul, screwdriver,
whip, writing implements, etc...

Guiding:
set square, algorithm,
straightedge, etc...

Protecting:

Seizing and holding:
pliers, glove, wrench, etc...

SECTION 5

TECHNOLOGY

The development over time of systematic
techniques for making and doing things.

The term technology, a discourse on
the arts, both fine and applied.

When it first appeared in English in
the 17th century, it was used to mean
a discussion of the applied arts only,
and gradually these “arts” themselves
came to be the object of the designation.

The early 20th century, the term embraced
a growing range of means, processes, and
ideas in addition to tools and machines.
By mid-century, technology was defined by
such phrases as “the means or activity by
which man seeks to change or manipulate his
environment.”

Even such broad definitions have been
criticized by observers who point out
increasing difficulty of distinguishing
between scientific inquiry and the
technological activity.

TECHNOLOGY

During the Middle Ages (a period of
European history which began in the
fifth century) art and learning was
centered on theology.

But at the start of the fourteenth
century, thinkers and artists turned
their eye toward humanity.

This cultural movement was called the
Renaissance. It started in northern
Italy, and then gradually spread to
the rest of western Europe.

Many historians consider the Renaissance
the beginning of the modern era of human
history.
