SECTION 1

ALTERNATIVE
ENERGY

Alternative energy is an umbrella term that
refers to any source of usable energy
intended to replace fuel sources without
the undesired consequences of the replaced
fuels.

In a general sense in contemporary society,
alternative energy is that which is produced
without the undesirable consequences of the
burning of fossil fuels, such as high carbon
dioxide emissions, which is considered to be
the major contributing factor of global
warming according to the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change.

SECTION 2

RENEWABLE
ENEREGY

Renewable energy is energy which comes
from natural resources such as:

sunlight,

wind,

rain,

tides,

geothermal heat,

which are renewable
(naturally replenished).

In 2008, about 19% of global final energy
consumption came from renewables, with 13%
coming from traditional biomass, which is
mainly used for heating, and 3.2% from
hydroelectricity.

New renewables;

small hydro,

modern biomass,

wind,

solar,

geothermal,

biofuels)

accounted for another 2.7%
and are growing very rapidly.

The share of renewables in electricity generation
is around 18%, with 15% of global electricity
coming from hydroelectricity and 3% from
newrenewables.

Renewable energy replaces
conventional fuels in four
distinct areas:

power generation,

hot water/ space heating,

transport fuels,

rural (off-grid)
energy services.

SECTION 3

GRANTS
FOR
ALTERNATIVE
ENERGY
RESEARCH

Grants are available to finance research
and development projects in alternative
energy fields such as:

solar,

wind,

hydrogen,

fuel cells,

geothermal.

Grants cover the costs associated with
research projects as well as the costs
to share alternative energy information
with various entities such as state and
local government agencies.

These research grants do not have to be
repaid by the recipients.

SECTION 4

CONSERVATION
RESEARCH
AND
DEVELOPMENT

The Department of Energy sponsors the
Conservation Research and Development
program.

Grants from this program are used to
conduct research and develop technologies
to conserve energy.

Areas of technologies include;

hydrogen and fuel cell technology
as well as building, industrial,
and vehicle technologies.

Results from the approved research and
development projects are shared with
scientific and industrial communities
and also state and local government
agencies.

Along with state and local government
agencies, private nonprofit institutions
and for-profit organizations can apply
for these grants.
