The goal of putting a computer in every home
is coming closer to fruition as a bevy of
organizations make free computers available
to low-income families and the elderly. But
actually getting your hands on one of those
free computers may not be in the cards if
you don't live in the right state or meet
specific qualifications.
Instructions
1. Agree to pay a bit more to access the Internet,
and you'll discover several companies that are
anxious to give you a free computer. You may also
have to visit websites generating ads for their
clients. A couple of the companies that fall into
this category can be found in the Resources section.
2. Agree to stroll through a bunch of advertisements
everytime you surf the web, and you'll discover there
are several companies that will give you a free
computer. Many are totally free, including Internet
access and e-mail.
3. Receive a free computer or Web TV if you are a
disabled veteran without making any commitment for
Internet service or paying other monthly fees.
4. Obtain a free computer if you are part of a
low-income family. There are tons of places that
are willing to hand out these computers, but most
will only provide them to families living in their
local areas. Examples of this type of service can
be found in the Resource section.
5. Meet specific criteria and, if you're a senior
citizen, you can get a free computer. Sometimes
there's a small fee involved (like shipping and
handling), but these computers are totally free
for the elderly. You should also check with
organizations in your area for free PCs.
Tips & Warnings
Unfortunately there are also a lot of scam artists
out there that either want you to spend hours on a
PC filling out "surveys" to get a free PC or
offering "free PCs" for a monthly service charge,
which could add up to more than the computer would
cost if purchased from a retail store.

Computing is a terrific way to stay up-to-date
on news and weather, keep in touch with family
and friends through e-mail, and explore hobbies,
senior travel opportunities, and other senior
activities. A free messaging system such as
Yahoo Messenger or AOL Instant Messenger enables
grandparents to "chat" with the younger set and
reduce long distance phone charges as well.
Many seniors also use computers to write a family
history, catalogue pictures, even trace the roots
of the family tree.
A computer loaded with specialized software is also
a helpful asset for managing banking and expenses,
tracking retirement investments, and preparing taxes.
Finding Free Computers for Seniors
The Local Library
Most public libraries have a bank of computers,
free for use by all library cardholders. If
you'd like to do a little research, print off
online coupons before shopping, or check in with
an old school chum through e-mail, the library
is a great option. These institutions will often
restrict access to certain websites, and you
won't be able to download or install software,
but you will be able to take care of basic
computing needs. To protect your identity and
other valuable information, do not access online
financial accounts on a public computer, and
always make sure to log off of e-mail accounts.
Educational Computing Centers
If you're participating in a lifelong learning
program or another advanced education class,
there are free computers for seniors to use for
coursework, research, e-mail, and other
fundamentals. You'll find these systems in
college libraries and computing centers. As with
public libraries, certain restrictions may apply.
Senior Centers
Community senior centers continue to expand the
resources available to people over age 55. Many
facilities not only offer the free use of computers,
but also host a variety of computing classes to keep
your skills sharp.
Senior centers are also slightly more willing to
consider installing a certain software program,
such as a genealogy or messaging program, if they
feel all members will benefit from its use.
Community Programs
Some communities have assistance programs that offer
free computers for seniors, especially those who are
parents or guardians of school-age children, or
in-home schoolteachers. These programs are usually
funded with grants, part of a federal excess
redistribution program, or a local sponsor's effort
of outreach. One example is Computers for Learning,
which redistributes federal and corporation surplus
computers. Another is Share the Technology, which
allows seniors with disabilities to request a computer
from a pool of donated resources.
Ask a librarian for assistance in finding local, county,
and state agencies that may be a part of a computer
donation or recycling program. Note that you may have to
fall within a certain income bracket to be eligible.

Laptop computers are no longer considered just
a luxury, many people need them for school,
employment, and for other practical means. Many
grants are available to help college students
buy computers for study, home school students,
disabled individuals/the elderly, and those who
must stay at home to work.
Instructions
1. For home school students wishing to find grant
funding for a laptop computer contact you local
school district. Most school districts receive
annual funding to assist in the learning of area
home school students. Many of such grants note
the importance of having a computer for students
learning form home.
2. Disabled adults or other individuals who are
unable to seek employment outside the home may
seek grant funding to buy a laptop computer
through the local vocational rehabilitation
center. Individuals must be able to show some
reassurance that they will be able to obtain
some form of income by the use of the computer.
Some grants will come with a year of paid
Internet connection.
3.Collage students wishing to have financial help
in purchasing a laptop, will need to see their
financial aid counselor the college administration
office. Many grant will give favor to students who
do distance studies or who work full time that will
find it difficult to use public computers.
4. Senior citizens and other individuals who are
seeking grant funding for a computer for social
reasons should contact the Department of aging.
Most grants for senior citizens to get computers
to help them connect with family and friends are
funded by private foundations. Even though the
Department of Aging is government operated, they
will know where to refer individual that qualify
for assistance. Most organizations will require
a referral from a government agency before
accepting a grant application.
5. Individuals who would benefit from a computer
socially and/or career wise due to a disability
should also contact the local vocational
rehabilitation office. The office will be able
to direct individuals to other off branches of
the rehabilitation agencies as needed.
