Human immunodeficiency virus or HIV
is a retrovirus that causes Acquired
Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS),

begins to fail, leading to some of
the life-threatening opportunistic
infections.
Infection with HIV
occurs by the transfer
of:
blood,
semen,
vaginal fluid,
Cowper's fluid
or breast milk.
The three major
routes of
transmission:
unprotected sexual
intercourse,
contaminated needles,
transmission from an
infected mother to her
baby at birth or through
breast milk.
